Norm Voss Features James Hunter in New History of Heroes Podcast Episode
A local history presentation and the inaugural Revolution on the Rappahannock event helped inspire a new episode celebrating the legacy of James Hunter and Hunter’s Iron Works.
An important part of preserving history is making sure the stories of the people who shaped it continue to reach new audiences. A recent episode of the History of Heroes podcast does just that, bringing renewed attention to James Hunter, the patriot behind Hunter’s Iron Works in Stafford County, Virginia.
Hosted by Norm Voss, also known as Rocker and History Buff, the episode was inspired in part by his connection with the Freedom Forge Foundation and its efforts to bring local history to life.
The story began when Norm attended one of the Foundation’s presentations at the Central Rappahannock Regional Library. Following his visit to the inaugural Revolution on the Rappahannock event, the history, community engagement, and enthusiasm surrounding the site provided the final inspiration for an entire episode dedicated to James Hunter.
During the American Revolution, Hunter’s Iron Works played a significant role in supporting the Patriot cause. Through its Rappahannock Forge, the facility produced essential military supplies, including iron goods, camp kettles, and weapons for American forces.
Despite these contributions, James Hunter and the work carried out at his iron works have remained largely overlooked in broader accounts of the American Revolution. Bringing these stories into public conversations is an important part of understanding the people, industries, and communities that helped shape the nation's founding.
The History of Heroes episode is another example of how local history can inspire meaningful connections beyond the communities where it originated. Through storytelling, public programs, and community partnerships, stories that might otherwise remain overlooked can find new audiences and recognition.
The Freedom Forge Foundation is grateful to Norm Voss for his dedication to sharing these stories and helping bring James Hunter's legacy to a wider audience.
Preserving history takes a community. And every story shared is another step toward keeping that history alive.
